ADDICTION

“Everybody is addicted to something, everyone  got a grip onto something, even if it is just a feel of response that you feel maybe once maybe twice or hundreds of times, hundreds of times, without it it’s just harder to function a times, you race to the bottom of every single bottle, as if there was someone or something in mind, you struggle in your mind, and you tell yourself lie after lie till you get to the point where there is no more lying, the people working with you know this atimes, you walk in the room and it all goes quiet till you break up the silence, you say you have been at the gym but the way that you look can’t blame it on the diet, so what’s u hiding? “
This is John Doe song rap and has been the theme of most of my conversation this week. Everyone has an addiction we just have to respect each other’s addiction if we are to cohabit peacefully in this world.

Exams

Finally the exam panic period has period. This is the first stage, the cats and take a ways period. This is the time which students are doing their best to meet up on group works and finish up on their personal assignments regardless of all odds example lighting issue. This is the period of long queues at the cyber and printing rooms to get their assignments printed. At this time students have also realized the need for the humongous handouts example the education students and flash disks to save the soft copies for the information science students. We all had January and February to do all this but we always want to do things the last minute, well for my comrades applying this here is my take:
The exams are here to begin on April and you better start reading now as you never know your tomorrow may just be the exam day.

CHURCH MATTERS.

In Moi University we basically have three churches, the catholic, the CU and the Grace Chapel but may we not forget the Muslims, Indians and other unnamed denominations. Honestly speaking most of us do not attend most of the services especially Christians. I do not misjudge us but to speak the truth, other denominations have very strict rules that bind them tightly to their religion. Do not get me wrong that Christians do not have strict rules that bind them we do but they are not as strict. In short this is my say many of us do not attend Sunday church services me included because of the following reasons

1. Nursing Saturday drinking spree hangovers.

2. Laziness.

3. It is the only free time one has to read.

4. Sleep.

Sadly, they are not worth missing a Sunday church service.

Student leadership in Moi

With all the cases facing Moi University I cold end up blogging pages and pages to explain them all.
Here is a short version of my opinion:
1. The administration to me claims full responsibility. They need to create a body to supervise the MUSO officials. They may also be the ones that do not heed to the students and student leaders issues. That is some issues are beyond the ability of the student leader.
2.For the MUSO officials they get paid they are also given one serving term. So they have no reason to try to get into office again thus they get reluctant to fulfill the objectives they set.
3. Finally, according to me strikes are the best means through which we can communicate to the administration and make most impact.

LAST MINUTE RUSH

As humans we always tend to wait for the last grievous moment to do what we are and were expected to do long time ago. In my case class and group assignments top the list with other minor issues taking up all the time as much as I try to avoid it. My question is in this day and age is how we will survive to cope with the aspect of procrastination as our will seems to be overpowered most of the time.

BAD=GOOD, GOOD=BAD

This was the first statement that really confused me for today. The obvious reply of many will be not true or how? My question was how? This led to consecutive questions that had me in agreement with the equation. Here are some of the explanations;

1.        Many students regard reading as bad as it requires time and concentration to manage it but the results are good example wealth, recognition.

2.       Drinking and drugs is the main ways many people opt for releasing stress and having a good time but the results tend to be on the negative example addiction, money wastage, diseases.

After such vivid examples I understood the whole concept do you?

OUR FORGETFUL NATURE??

Just recently we had the meeting with the vice chancellor who claimed he was going to make visible changes regarding security and accommodation on the eve of Charity’s death.

The Senior Assistant Dean had these as his main points.

a)      Buildings are to be built to accommodate more students.

b)      A police post will be started at stage.

c)       He claimed that the MCA has pledged solar powered street lights at stage.

d)      The MCA will ensure guarding and maintain roads at stage.

e)      He also urged the students to directly report cases and issues to his office at the student center.

Among the above which can you confidently claim you see change? It was also added that all the male hostels would be turned to female hostels to accommodate all ladies living in stage, was that even agreed on? Or researched to ensure the female students actually want to live in the university.

It has been a week now, Charity’s case remains unsolved, no changes regarding security has been done, comrades seem to also let it slide and remain mum and the cycle of forgotten promises continues. What should happen next to have new promises made after the comrades strike?

GUYO TO BLAME FOR INSECURITY AND ACCOMODATION CRISIS?!

Charity’s brutal rape and murder has brought about several conversations ranging from insecurity, accommodation, power supply just to name a few regarding the security and accommodation sector. Sadly for Mr. Guyo he is the current Director of Security and Accommodation so all blame falls on him. This to me seems all familiar with how our country runs example Charity Ngilu was blamed for the land grabbing issue just a few weeks ago as she is in power regarding lands. In her case I will not blame her as for as far as Kenya got it’s independence land grabbing has always been an issue and no amount of changing those in power would solve the whole situation all together.

Back to my topic for today, comrades’ loud chants “Guyo must go” were the order of the eve of Sunday morning on discovery of Charity’s body. My friend was very keen on supporting them giving reasons that Guyo had done nothing on the accommodation saga that has left many students “pirating” due to inadequate rooms. I had to ask her what she expected them to do and she claims that he should have spoken to the administration and have them decide to have some students at home.

That got me thinking, if the government expects to have all university students done with their studies in four years considering the fluctuated number of students doesn’t it put the administration at the limelight to have all these done and over with at the expense of the comrades? So what can a Student though the Director of Security and Accommodation do to solve all that? Force the administration?

I have to agree on one of her points that Guyo could have arranged a strike with fellow comrades on the issue of uncompleted hostels. Hostel M has only one unfinished wing since the year 2012!!Worse still the foundations of hostel N and I have been laid out which I noticed just recently after severe guidance as they are covered in bushes. I am even surprised to discover they were laid out before I even came to Moi. Guyo at the moment could ease pressure on him if he decided to act on such grounds and ask the forbidden questions example where does all the money worth millions given to universities for upgrading end up?

The next issue is insecurity as Guyo’s fault. For this situation I even wonder what part he has to play. Will he place the security lights? Employ watchmen etc? some will claim I am defending him but my question is how sure are you that he has not asked all this from the administration who might have shunned the offer or are just reluctant to the offer. With all my comments many will ask me then what is the job of the Director of Security and Accomodation?

This is my take,

1.       He should follow up on these unfinished hostels saga and give the results to the fellow comrades in detail at least to have them on your back when things get heated.

2.       Secondly, he should organize the comrades’ issues in order example the power issue in Soweto hostels. He should identify the real issue which is the power need overload that surpasses the capability of the transformer thus leading to the power blackouts. He should get the facts right beginning with the amount of funds needed to buy and install a new transformer. He should then present the detailed information to the administration and await further notice at Moi calls it.

3.       In most cases our needs are not met till when something big happens a latest example is in the case of Charity’s death. The administration saw the need for security lights at stage after the saga and not before. This is where Guyo comes in. being the Director he should have overseen such issues long before and acted on them accordingly. I hope he did.

In short do not blame Guyo as me he might be trying his best which we might not see. Secondly, if your chants succeed and you have him removed as the Director of Security and Accommodation with you as the current director are you sure you will succeed or we might have other chants later as ”Security and accommodation director must go”?.

FAREWELL TO CHARITY MUTHONI MAINA

This has been a chaotic week which began on Sunday with the discovery of Charity’s lifeless body.

Charity Muthoni was a 3rd year student of Moi University studying for a degree in B.A.E in the School of Arts specializing in English and Literature. Little of her life is known so far which is probably for the best due to the rumors flying around which may prove very painful to the family members.

Her body was found by a woman looking for her cattle early morning near the Veecam hostels (Hostels located outside campus) at stage in a bush. She was completely naked, her clothes scattered around and her bag containing books next to her. After a fast checkup it was concluded that she was brutally raped. She had bloody bruises on her neck and legs showing her struggles of the night. The ground had marks of how she had been dragged as the police followed up the issue. It is speculated that she met with her death at around 11 pm as she was coming from an evangelistic team fellowship. Charity used to serve as an usher in Moi University Christian Union.

This was the final blow to fellow comrades about insecurity. Her body was placed in the police car and taken to the student center. This ensured that the whole campus knew what had happened and show their reaction. Many politicians took this as an opportunity to make themselves recognized and claim Guyo the current MUSO Security and Accommodation post holder responsible for the death thus he should be removed from the post. They also added he has been very lazy in his post and done almost nothing for the comrades. The incitements continued. The dean of students tried to calm the situation to no avail due to the shouts and chants. Meanwhile, at stage people were gathered in groups to discuss the issue and explain to the others what they knew pointing fingers to any one they think would be the perpetrator. The angry students at the student center later decided to head towards the stage running and shouting forcing the businesses at stage to close their businesses.

The students gathered at the stage gate and lit trees and wood. This was not enough, they later headed towards the university main gate destroying and burning everything on their path. This prompted the police to try and control the situation by throwing teargas and rubber bullets. Angry students were the winner as they had the less than five policemen running. The comrades later put the police land cruiser on fire. This had been another wrong move as it led to another severe injury of another student.

All said and done this week has been hectic from the very start and I am glad it has come to an end. May Charity rest in peace? Only when the perpetrators will be put to justice is when she will.

MUSO ELECTIONS AROUND THE CORNER

I had the brief chance of having Mr. Jared Mogire from the School of Arts come and introduce himself to me. He looks well-kept and his voice has the hint of authority. He starts the conversation on how many of my classmates have told him that I am hard to convince and I get the feeling that he wants a challenge and see the results, I dare not disappoint. He then goes on to introduce himself as one from the school of arts studying political science. His main aim of visiting was to familiarize himself ahead of the July MUSO elections which I have to admit got me off-guard. He goes on to explain that he has been planning for the docket since first year and has been part of a group of student leaders who go on tours outside country with South Africa and Rwanda as examples. He already has a budget for the whole affair and I have to admit I am quite impressed of his organized manner.

With his well explained details of his leadership plans and skills I am very interested on knowing his plans for the comrades. The point of organized and co-ordination hits me again. He begins by claiming that he wants to leave that seat having done something Moi will remember. Anxiety grips me. “I want to create a MUSO office” was Jared’s words.

At first I am confused till he starts explaining the whole deal. This is what I understood. During the election period we become so close to the candidates wooing them on and having chats with them time to time openly. Immediately after winning the elections they become untouchables. They are rarely found just hanging out with the “lowly comrades” which is the source of all problems as they do not get to know what is happening underground. This thus brings the need of the office to ensure that each comrade can forward their grievances to the MUSO and have them dealt with appropriately. To me this was very pleasing information though the steps to be taken to achieve it may seem dim the results would prove gratifying.

He also touched on the security issue that has led to the death of Charity a fellow comrade last Sunday (May her soul rest in peace). The presence of street lights and watchmen for each plot employed by the landlords were his key points. To my satisfaction he also did not blame Guyo the current Director of Security and Accommodation for the insecurity though he claims he has a minor position in all this.

Truth spoken I like his ideas and I have a watch on him to be absolutely sure that I am going to vote for him as the 2015 MUSO chairman because so far I see a vision in a determined man paired with confidence and organization sure to clinch the MUSO seat.

TWO SIDES OF THE COIN

In this life everyone has two sides of the coin it may be

a)      What you want people to see and what you do not want them to see.

b)      The best and worst side of you.

c)       Your fake personality and your true personality.

d)      Who you are with your friends and who you are when alone.

There are other many versions to this that you may know including yours. I know most people will be intrigued on the topic of this blog, the reason behind it etc. honestly I am a two sided coin and it took a chat with someone unexpected for me to realize. I realized I might have more than one pair of the two sided coin, this may be brought by my ability to interact with any personality. My friend made the observation while I was just talking and it got me off-guard. It is really hard to get me off-guard but at that moment I had to think of the real meaning to it and thus came up with this post. We all have two or more personalities naturally as I doubt if there is any human being without the trait. I do not have a problem with this in the first place but my question is does it work for you or against you?

Sad news for Moi University

A 3rd year school of arts student was raped, killed and found today past Veecam. She was found naked today morning by a woman looking for her cattle in the morning in a bush. Next to her was her bag containing her books and her clothes scattered around.  Her body was covered and taken in a police car to the student center to attract other students to the issue. The politics began followed by riots. This led to police firing tear gas and rubber bullets adding to the chaos. The students managed to push off the police and burnt their car. We are now waiting for the administration’s decision on the whole issue but with the situation in Chepkoilel we might end up following suit. Going home.

MY COURSE, MY CHOICE

Countless times I have heard the words “I feel this is not a course for me”. Sadly, I also fall in this category even after I did the second selection for my course after high school. Today what surprised me most is the fact that Blake, a guy who was lucky to have the course I wanted most said the same thing. He added that the lecture topics taught to them do not relate to the field they chose. I had to defend my dream course, our courses need theory so as to apply it practically but well it seemed like a weak defense when I heard the course title.

I am almost completely sure that more than 50% would change their course not only in Moi University but others too if given the opportunity. This though got me thinking if we did have the chance to change courses would we stick to them or change them all over again? Worse yet, would we change courses and regret it and have ourselves yearning for the same course we left? After high school we were all given the choice to decide on the courses we want, it was our choice from the start so why regret it now?

The Universities also have a part to play in all this. They give courses highly rated names to grasp your attention to courses that will leave you depressed afterwards, they fail to educate you on the course to begin with and to make matters worse the institution may lack equipment, resources and have lecturers who make the course seem worse than it really is.

Fate may also be a reason why you are in the course you do not like. Life has a way of ensuring everything works out as planned from the start you may not know it at first but that is just the way it is. The course may bring out the best in you that you never knew was there.

Try as I might with all these reasoning I may not be able to change my mind about changing my course but one thing is sure it was my choice.MY COURSE, MY CHOICE.

I WANT A WIFE!

I have only three more semesters till my last moments in Moi University. Common to many this is the year which you enjoy most and make most of your lifetime decisions. I want to remember it all and show it to the world thus my blog “I am the listener”. I created the blog knowing that most of it will involve what I hear. As usual I listen much and talk less but here I talk what I listened. Mind boggling right?

All the real characters names are withheld.

I want a wife.

I start my blog with the M word, no, not men to the ladies but MARRIAGE. This is one term rarely heard on campus grounds but surprisingly enough today I was surrounded by marriage talks from a group of my friends. It all started as a joke actually with one participant let’s name him Max  claimed he needs something great in life before he gets to 25 and marry before 28. His comrade lets name him Mark G short for Mark Gordon agreed to it and it was our turn as the girls to state our positions. My friend Catherine claimed she wanted a kid by 28 but marriage was not a goal that she had set a date for. My opinion well was quite complicated: I want my first child by 29 years and live with the husband for a few years in a come we stay relationship to understand who I am going to marry [with the child in mind] before the M word comes to mind. Both men did not quite agree with my opinion but they both agreed they want a church wedding by the time they were 28 but not after 30. Their reasons were as follows:

a)      My mother will start asking questions, she needs grandchildren.

b)      It is a trend in the family from previous siblings.

They both had a common men’s strategy in marriage give her all she needs (Material and money) and unconditional love but in every case there are conditions.

First, they prefer having to come home and meet her there waiting for him. Mark G. gave an example that he would not like the idea of having him text his wife that he is in a “jam” and have her reply that she is right behind him. That is absurd he said. I had to oppose, we are in the 21st century women want independence and their jobs are their main ways of expressing themselves. I am so glad my friend Catherine agreed; she actually made a joke on it let me quote “you need to get a primitive lady to fulfill such needs”.

Second condition, Loyalty. This started as a quick question for a cheating man who will the wife blame the lady or her man? The same applies to a cheating lady, who will the husband blame the man or his lady? I will not answer such questions as I know they are obvious to many and the answers are highly contradictory. This was a really bitter issue to Mark G. while Max just listened, Catherine on the other hand just added a few comments here and there. For me this specific issue was not one I wanted to be involved in but just listen and understand my comrades. Mark G. claimed he would kill the lady and he insisted on it till finally I realized he was saying the truth. He would do it no pun intended so for any of my girlfriends intending to marry a Mark G. or anyone similar to him be Loyal unless you want to die. Catherine then brought up the issue of men cheating and this is where it got all tricky. From Catherine’s expression and talk I could understand she was not into it though her grandparents are polygamous. Mark G.’s grandparents were also polygamous apparently. Max did not make matters any easier by delivering his punch statement “Men cannot say no to a lady”. This got me tempted to ask for the ownership of his phone just to see if he would say no. Sadly I didn’t lucky for him. He repeated this statement a couple of times with such force that it got me thinking that he might have an experience of it. Mark G. added weight to the issue with the claim that his wife might just miss one vital item that another lady has that he would really want. We all laughed at this statement but deep down the irony of it all was nagging feelings to me, I don’t know if I was the only one affected. Catherine suddenly changed the topic of conversation by a simple question “Do you think these campus relationships will last after 10 years from now?” Max just claimed he doesn’t want to present a real answer to this as you never know what the future holds. Mark G. on the other hand seemed unsure of its survival by his contradicting statements though his final opinion on it was similar to that of Max.

Third condition my Mother. This point was actually introduced by Catherine. Mark G. was interested on the list of factors women want in marriage and Catherine’s answer was Loyalty. She disregarded complete love with claims that a man’s first love and true love of their lives is their moms. This was a real soft spot for the men as they all began talking about their moms. Mark G. being the last born seemed most touched by explaining his story on how his mother was the reason for the change in his father. His father had been a longtime drunkard and his mother’s prayers and support was what kept the family alive and led to him turning to Christianity. Max had similar show of affection for his mom he even claimed he would like her to come often to his home and visit his wife. He added that he would really want his wife and mother to be best of friends. Catherine did not quite agree on this as for her all mothers should be a distant from their sons after they get married as this leads to so many complications afterwards. Max chose this moment to say he would buy his mother a range rover then considered the statement for some time before adding he would also buy one for his wife. “I am going to buy them their own range rovers in different colors to avoid drama” he added. Catherine had been quiet all through till she asked on how the married couple would intend to live with the husband’s mom around all through? The men claimed they would not allow her to stay for long around as they would end up being uncomfortable. This will prevent them from showing affection to their wives in public. This was followed by some few crude jokes from the men that would surely get them in trouble with their mom’s. To sum it up they would always be on their mother’s side even if she was on the wrong as Max said.

The conversation was coming to a close as all the others had to go to the library and I had this blog to publish but as usual my friend Catherine always knows how to end the conversation this was what she said ”We are too young to think of this now, for now let us live each day as it comes”

COLD DAYS AHEAD

Cold nights ahead
Valentine is long gone and the cold nights are here. I am going to hate these coming days all talks will be about sweethearts and sleep overs. I am depressed over this issue cause apparently at the moment I have no one to invite over for a sleep depressing right? My roommate may also give me the commonly known “exile” so in this campus world you need a special someone for this cold season around. Too bad for me my sweetheart is a long distance away.
