ADDICTION

“Everybody is addicted to something, everyone  got a grip onto something, even if it is just a feel of response that you feel maybe once maybe twice or hundreds of times, hundreds of times, without it it’s just harder to function a times, you race to the bottom of every single bottle, as if there was someone or something in mind, you struggle in your mind, and you tell yourself lie after lie till you get to the point where there is no more lying, the people working with you know this atimes, you walk in the room and it all goes quiet till you break up the silence, you say you have been at the gym but the way that you look can’t blame it on the diet, so what’s u hiding? “
This is John Doe song rap and has been the theme of most of my conversation this week. Everyone has an addiction we just have to respect each other’s addiction if we are to cohabit peacefully in this world.

Exams

Finally the exam panic period has period. This is the first stage, the cats and take a ways period. This is the time which students are doing their best to meet up on group works and finish up on their personal assignments regardless of all odds example lighting issue. This is the period of long queues at the cyber and printing rooms to get their assignments printed. At this time students have also realized the need for the humongous handouts example the education students and flash disks to save the soft copies for the information science students. We all had January and February to do all this but we always want to do things the last minute, well for my comrades applying this here is my take:
The exams are here to begin on April and you better start reading now as you never know your tomorrow may just be the exam day.

CHURCH MATTERS.

In Moi University we basically have three churches, the catholic, the CU and the Grace Chapel but may we not forget the Muslims, Indians and other unnamed denominations. Honestly speaking most of us do not attend most of the services especially Christians. I do not misjudge us but to speak the truth, other denominations have very strict rules that bind them tightly to their religion. Do not get me wrong that Christians do not have strict rules that bind them we do but they are not as strict. In short this is my say many of us do not attend Sunday church services me included because of the following reasons

1. Nursing Saturday drinking spree hangovers.

2. Laziness.

3. It is the only free time one has to read.

4. Sleep.

Sadly, they are not worth missing a Sunday church service.

Student leadership in Moi

With all the cases facing Moi University I cold end up blogging pages and pages to explain them all.
Here is a short version of my opinion:
1. The administration to me claims full responsibility. They need to create a body to supervise the MUSO officials. They may also be the ones that do not heed to the students and student leaders issues. That is some issues are beyond the ability of the student leader.
2.For the MUSO officials they get paid they are also given one serving term. So they have no reason to try to get into office again thus they get reluctant to fulfill the objectives they set.
3. Finally, according to me strikes are the best means through which we can communicate to the administration and make most impact.

LAST MINUTE RUSH

As humans we always tend to wait for the last grievous moment to do what we are and were expected to do long time ago. In my case class and group assignments top the list with other minor issues taking up all the time as much as I try to avoid it. My question is in this day and age is how we will survive to cope with the aspect of procrastination as our will seems to be overpowered most of the time.

BAD=GOOD, GOOD=BAD

This was the first statement that really confused me for today. The obvious reply of many will be not true or how? My question was how? This led to consecutive questions that had me in agreement with the equation. Here are some of the explanations;

1.        Many students regard reading as bad as it requires time and concentration to manage it but the results are good example wealth, recognition.

2.       Drinking and drugs is the main ways many people opt for releasing stress and having a good time but the results tend to be on the negative example addiction, money wastage, diseases.

After such vivid examples I understood the whole concept do you?

OUR FORGETFUL NATURE??

Just recently we had the meeting with the vice chancellor who claimed he was going to make visible changes regarding security and accommodation on the eve of Charity’s death.

The Senior Assistant Dean had these as his main points.

a)      Buildings are to be built to accommodate more students.

b)      A police post will be started at stage.

c)       He claimed that the MCA has pledged solar powered street lights at stage.

d)      The MCA will ensure guarding and maintain roads at stage.

e)      He also urged the students to directly report cases and issues to his office at the student center.

Among the above which can you confidently claim you see change? It was also added that all the male hostels would be turned to female hostels to accommodate all ladies living in stage, was that even agreed on? Or researched to ensure the female students actually want to live in the university.

It has been a week now, Charity’s case remains unsolved, no changes regarding security has been done, comrades seem to also let it slide and remain mum and the cycle of forgotten promises continues. What should happen next to have new promises made after the comrades strike?

GUYO TO BLAME FOR INSECURITY AND ACCOMODATION CRISIS?!

Charity’s brutal rape and murder has brought about several conversations ranging from insecurity, accommodation, power supply just to name a few regarding the security and accommodation sector. Sadly for Mr. Guyo he is the current Director of Security and Accommodation so all blame falls on him. This to me seems all familiar with how our country runs example Charity Ngilu was blamed for the land grabbing issue just a few weeks ago as she is in power regarding lands. In her case I will not blame her as for as far as Kenya got it’s independence land grabbing has always been an issue and no amount of changing those in power would solve the whole situation all together.

Back to my topic for today, comrades’ loud chants “Guyo must go” were the order of the eve of Sunday morning on discovery of Charity’s body. My friend was very keen on supporting them giving reasons that Guyo had done nothing on the accommodation saga that has left many students “pirating” due to inadequate rooms. I had to ask her what she expected them to do and she claims that he should have spoken to the administration and have them decide to have some students at home.

That got me thinking, if the government expects to have all university students done with their studies in four years considering the fluctuated number of students doesn’t it put the administration at the limelight to have all these done and over with at the expense of the comrades? So what can a Student though the Director of Security and Accommodation do to solve all that? Force the administration?

I have to agree on one of her points that Guyo could have arranged a strike with fellow comrades on the issue of uncompleted hostels. Hostel M has only one unfinished wing since the year 2012!!Worse still the foundations of hostel N and I have been laid out which I noticed just recently after severe guidance as they are covered in bushes. I am even surprised to discover they were laid out before I even came to Moi. Guyo at the moment could ease pressure on him if he decided to act on such grounds and ask the forbidden questions example where does all the money worth millions given to universities for upgrading end up?

The next issue is insecurity as Guyo’s fault. For this situation I even wonder what part he has to play. Will he place the security lights? Employ watchmen etc? some will claim I am defending him but my question is how sure are you that he has not asked all this from the administration who might have shunned the offer or are just reluctant to the offer. With all my comments many will ask me then what is the job of the Director of Security and Accomodation?

This is my take,

1.       He should follow up on these unfinished hostels saga and give the results to the fellow comrades in detail at least to have them on your back when things get heated.

2.       Secondly, he should organize the comrades’ issues in order example the power issue in Soweto hostels. He should identify the real issue which is the power need overload that surpasses the capability of the transformer thus leading to the power blackouts. He should get the facts right beginning with the amount of funds needed to buy and install a new transformer. He should then present the detailed information to the administration and await further notice at Moi calls it.

3.       In most cases our needs are not met till when something big happens a latest example is in the case of Charity’s death. The administration saw the need for security lights at stage after the saga and not before. This is where Guyo comes in. being the Director he should have overseen such issues long before and acted on them accordingly. I hope he did.

In short do not blame Guyo as me he might be trying his best which we might not see. Secondly, if your chants succeed and you have him removed as the Director of Security and Accommodation with you as the current director are you sure you will succeed or we might have other chants later as ”Security and accommodation director must go”?.

FAREWELL TO CHARITY MUTHONI MAINA

This has been a chaotic week which began on Sunday with the discovery of Charity’s lifeless body.

Charity Muthoni was a 3rd year student of Moi University studying for a degree in B.A.E in the School of Arts specializing in English and Literature. Little of her life is known so far which is probably for the best due to the rumors flying around which may prove very painful to the family members.

Her body was found by a woman looking for her cattle early morning near the Veecam hostels (Hostels located outside campus) at stage in a bush. She was completely naked, her clothes scattered around and her bag containing books next to her. After a fast checkup it was concluded that she was brutally raped. She had bloody bruises on her neck and legs showing her struggles of the night. The ground had marks of how she had been dragged as the police followed up the issue. It is speculated that she met with her death at around 11 pm as she was coming from an evangelistic team fellowship. Charity used to serve as an usher in Moi University Christian Union.

This was the final blow to fellow comrades about insecurity. Her body was placed in the police car and taken to the student center. This ensured that the whole campus knew what had happened and show their reaction. Many politicians took this as an opportunity to make themselves recognized and claim Guyo the current MUSO Security and Accommodation post holder responsible for the death thus he should be removed from the post. They also added he has been very lazy in his post and done almost nothing for the comrades. The incitements continued. The dean of students tried to calm the situation to no avail due to the shouts and chants. Meanwhile, at stage people were gathered in groups to discuss the issue and explain to the others what they knew pointing fingers to any one they think would be the perpetrator. The angry students at the student center later decided to head towards the stage running and shouting forcing the businesses at stage to close their businesses.

The students gathered at the stage gate and lit trees and wood. This was not enough, they later headed towards the university main gate destroying and burning everything on their path. This prompted the police to try and control the situation by throwing teargas and rubber bullets. Angry students were the winner as they had the less than five policemen running. The comrades later put the police land cruiser on fire. This had been another wrong move as it led to another severe injury of another student.

All said and done this week has been hectic from the very start and I am glad it has come to an end. May Charity rest in peace? Only when the perpetrators will be put to justice is when she will.

MUSO ELECTIONS AROUND THE CORNER

I had the brief chance of having Mr. Jared Mogire from the School of Arts come and introduce himself to me. He looks well-kept and his voice has the hint of authority. He starts the conversation on how many of my classmates have told him that I am hard to convince and I get the feeling that he wants a challenge and see the results, I dare not disappoint. He then goes on to introduce himself as one from the school of arts studying political science. His main aim of visiting was to familiarize himself ahead of the July MUSO elections which I have to admit got me off-guard. He goes on to explain that he has been planning for the docket since first year and has been part of a group of student leaders who go on tours outside country with South Africa and Rwanda as examples. He already has a budget for the whole affair and I have to admit I am quite impressed of his organized manner.

With his well explained details of his leadership plans and skills I am very interested on knowing his plans for the comrades. The point of organized and co-ordination hits me again. He begins by claiming that he wants to leave that seat having done something Moi will remember. Anxiety grips me. “I want to create a MUSO office” was Jared’s words.

At first I am confused till he starts explaining the whole deal. This is what I understood. During the election period we become so close to the candidates wooing them on and having chats with them time to time openly. Immediately after winning the elections they become untouchables. They are rarely found just hanging out with the “lowly comrades” which is the source of all problems as they do not get to know what is happening underground. This thus brings the need of the office to ensure that each comrade can forward their grievances to the MUSO and have them dealt with appropriately. To me this was very pleasing information though the steps to be taken to achieve it may seem dim the results would prove gratifying.

He also touched on the security issue that has led to the death of Charity a fellow comrade last Sunday (May her soul rest in peace). The presence of street lights and watchmen for each plot employed by the landlords were his key points. To my satisfaction he also did not blame Guyo the current Director of Security and Accommodation for the insecurity though he claims he has a minor position in all this.

Truth spoken I like his ideas and I have a watch on him to be absolutely sure that I am going to vote for him as the 2015 MUSO chairman because so far I see a vision in a determined man paired with confidence and organization sure to clinch the MUSO seat.
